Welcome to the John Hanson Community School Website. I hope that you will find the information that you are seeking through the various links.
John Hanson is a modern and progressive school, with a long tradition of serving the young people of Andover. The original school was designated a grammar school until 1974 when it became comprehensive.
The school then moved to the new site in Floral Way in 2002.
Our current physical environment is arguably the best in Hampshire. The fully accessible buildings house specialist teaching areas which serve our evolving curriculum. Our external spaces provide an exceptional environment for PE and other outdoor pursuits, and we have excellent facilities for students to engage and socialise outside beyond the formal curriculum. We are known at a regional level for our commitment to the United Nations Charter for the Rights of the Child; we were the first secondary school in the world to achieve UNICEF Accreditation. This framework provides us with a clear moral structure and purpose around which all of the school community functions.
I believe that we are a happy school where students conduct themselves well. Our overall levels of student attendance are very good, and formal and informal evidence sources indicate that our students feel happy and safe.
Student attainment has leaped in 2009, 65% of our graduating students achieved 5A*-C Grades at GCSE, with 57% including English and Mathematics. We were, of course, very pleased with this progress, but we are highly committed to heightening these standards. In 2010 our results progressed further with 73% of our graduating students achieving 5 GCSE or equivalent passes at grades A*-C, and 58% passed this threshold including English and Mathematics. In 2011 our results were pleasing with 74% achieving 5 GCSE or equivalent passes at grades A*-C, and 59% passed this threshold including English and Mathematics.
I took post as Headteacher in April 2009. I have previously been a Headteacher at two schools in an adjoining county and serve as an Ofsted qualified school inspector. My clear brief, set by the school Governors, is to develop an environment and provision where students ‘achieve more than they believed possible’. I am confident that my experience of school leadership, supported by a strong leadership team and excellent staff, will lead us to achieve our quest to be ‘good or outstanding’ in all aspects by 2012.
If you would like more information about the school than you can access further information on this website, please do not hesitate to contact us by telephone or email.
