John Hanson’s PE faculty endeavours to encourage and inspire all students to develop their full potential through a range of purposeful activities within a challenging environment. We believe that the school’s motto is achievable during PE lessons where students are challenged to be their best.

Students will be encouraged to develop personal attributes of commitment, fairness and passion and an appreciation of honest competition and good sportsmanship. Students will develop an understanding of the benefits of participating in Sport and the impact it could have on their health and well-being.

Throughout Year 7-10 the PE faculty ensures that all students follow as wide a range of activities as possible. This will allow students to experiment with sports and hopefully take one (or more!) on. Students will cover a range of activities following at least four of the following themes –

• Outwitting opponents, as in games activities.
• Accurate replication of actions, phrases and sequences, as in gymnastic activities.
• Exploring and communicating ideas, concepts and emotions, as in dance activities.
• Performing at maximum levels in relation to speed, height, distance, strength or accuracy, as in athletic activities.
• Identifying and solving problems as in outdoor activities
• Exercising safely and effectively to improve health and wellbeing, as in fitness and health activities.

During Year 11 students will have the opportunity to follow a chosen pathway to suit their own needs.

Extra Curricular
Students are given a wide range of opportunities to participate in Sports after school, whether that is in the form of a competitive fixture or a club. All details of the clubs/fixtures will appear on the schools website on a weekly basis. The faculty also lead a Ski trip and a Sports trip to Europe each year.

Options
Students can opt for two courses at the end of KS3 in PE. Students will be guided to pick the course which best suits them, with one course being assessed through an examination and practical ability (GCSE PE) and the other through coursework (BTEC PE). Both courses offer the same amount of practical lessons and both are aimed for students who will share our passion of PE.
