The School Exclusion Trial Evaluation
John Hanson along with other schools in the Andover consortium has been asked to participate in an evaluation project focussing upon how fixed and permanent exclusions are minimised. The consortium is seen as a model of good practice in a local, regional and national context. We will be sharing some information with the research team about our processes and the experience of our students, however all of this will be in an anonymised form with the exception of a Unique Pupil Number (UPN) to enable data can be matched. We will not be sharing any detail beyond this which will identify students or their families. The project is being undertaken for the Department of Education by the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER) and the Institute of Education (IOE), and will last for approximately 2 years. If you would like any further information, please contact Kim Hide kim.hide@jhanson.hants.sch.uk in the first instance.
Snow Closure Information
In the event of snow, a message will be posted on the school website between 0600 hours and 0700 hours on each day, providing the necessary information.
Cold weather and P.E.
As we are entering the cold weather period students will be allowed to wear appropriate gloves and hat (beanie type hat and thin gloves) in outside lessons, this will depend on the activity that is being taught. Students are allowed to wear a base layer which needs to be black or white.
Contact newsletter
Latest 'Contact' newletter is available here
Direct Contact with Parents/Carers
Occasionally, students have made direct contact with a parent/carer to alert them to a perceived difficulty in school without taking advice from a member of the school staff. This has resulted in the arrival of the parent/carer onto the school site without the school having any knowledge of the situation. If your child makes contact with you, please refer back to school by telephone in the first instance.
Parent Portal
Over the last few months parents/carers have been signing up for access to our Parent Portal. The Portal will allow you access to school reports, timetables, school letters and publications. In time we will also be able to provide attendance information and communicate to parents using email and text messaging. As more parents join the portal, the school will be able to make savings on paper and postal costs by providing access to important information online. Please take this opportunity to sign up for portal access now.
The Parent Portal will accept registration from parents. Details of how to register are available on the Parent Portal link. For those who have already registered for access you can visit the Portal directly here.

Late Detention
We have amended our response to students who arrive late to school at the start of the day. Any student who arrives late on 3 or more occasions during a term, will be directed to attend a school detention which take place each Friday afternoon from 1500 – 1600 hours. Students failing to attend the sanction are likely to be subject to a fixed-term exclusion.
Activities
Each week students are encouraged to join in with a range of activities beyond the curriculum. The details of the activities and events on offer will be shown here each week.
Parking – Please do not use the bays marked for use by Blue Badge holders when collecting students during the day or from after school activities.
Bicycles
Students who wish to cycle to school must apply for a cycle permit through Student Services. The permit requires the commitment from students to wear a helmet on their head in transit, and for the bicycles to be roadworthy. This means that they must be fitted with a functioning front and rear brake. Whilst we will do all that we can to ensure the security of bicycles stored on the premises, we do not take any responsibility for theft or damage. Given this we recommend that students wishing to cycle to school have their bicycles insured.
Work Placements
We are receiving a high volume of prospective educationalists wishing to undertake work experience or an observation placement at John Hanson. Please click on this link if you would like more information about our procedures before contacting us.
From September 2013 we will be using Show My Homework to display homework set for all students Years 7-11. We have launched the new system today and for the time being we will also continue to show a link to Planner Live on the website.
Show My Homework will allow students and parents to log in and see an indiviualised homework calendar and diary with all due dates clearly set.
While we get used to the system at school we are showing the full calendar of homeworks as they are set live on the system - it is possible to use the filters at the top to focus in on a particular year group and subject. We will issue more details about the system soon but you may like to have a look by visiting the link below.
