KS3—Year 7 pupils have 3 lessons per fortnight. They do a term each of French and German, and then focus on one language from January onwards - this will be based partly on pupil preference, but be influenced also by teachers’ recommendations.
In year 8 and year 9, pupils have 4 lessons per fortnight.
Regardless of which language is followed, pupils are taught the key skills of Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing and will cover such topic areas as: Yourself, family & pets, school, leisure, where you live, food & drink, travel, human rights and the world of work.

KS4—Students in years 10 & 11 may opt to follow the Edexcel GCSE course in French or German. They have 5 lessons per fortnight and continue to develop their abilities in the 4 key skills. They are assessed by final exam for Listening and Reading, each worth 20% of their final grade and by Controlled Assessment, at points throughout the course for Speaking and Writing, each accounting for 30%.
GCSE masterclasses run after school once a week, for students to gain extra help with things they may be finding difficult or for catching up.
We are a department of passionate linguists, and would wish to inspire others to embrace the languages and cultures of other countries. To this end, we offer a number of trips to broaden pupils’ experience:
- In year 8, pupils have the opportunity to visit Paris.
- In year 10, they can go to Normandy.
- Pupils in years 9,10 and 11 also have the opportunity of visiting the Frankfurt Christmas Market in Birmingham.
- Year 9 French students also take part in a visit from French students from St. Gilles.
