Students have one lesson of Drama per week at KS3. The aim of the subject is for students to learn performance and self presentation skills, to develop their confidence in presenting work to others and practise and perfect their group work, communication and co-operation skills. In Drama students will usually learn a technique, practise a technique perform a technique and evaluate a performance. In Year 7, topics covered include: Introduction to drama through ‘Gloom Manor’, Melodrama, Mime, Evacuees and ‘The Tempest’. In Year 8 topics covered include staging, exploring structure, physical theatre, status, ‘Pygmalion’ and soap operas. In Year 9, topics include tension, Theatre in Education, ‘Missing Dan Nolan’, comedy, devising from a stimulus.
Students can choose to study Drama for GCSE. They will have 5 lessons over a 2 week period. We follow the OCR exam board. The coursework is split into two components, each worth 30% of their overall mark — ‘Drama in the Making’ in which students devise their own 5 minute piece of Drama (Year 10) and ‘Page to Stage’ in which students perform a 10 minute extract from a play we have been studying (Year 11). At the end of Year11, students will have 10 hours to devise and perform a 10 minute exam piece which is performed in front of an external examiner.
Every year we aim to do a whole school production in the Hall around February and we also run a KS3 Drama Club which will perform smaller pieces in the Drama Studio. With Music, we also put on showcases of students work in the Drama Studio for parents to watch at different intervals out the year.
